MUSINGS FROM THE MAESTRA

Mary Woodmansee Green

What wonderful partners for an entire season of music...Music and the Dance!

From time immemorial, music has enhanced movement of the body. People have danced as part of their earliest rituals – to hunt, summon the gods, celebrate life cycle events, express joy, grief…every emotion. From the early days of the troubadours, people have danced to music – from simple flute or fiddle tunes passed from generation to generation, to complex ballets written by major composers, which have become cornerstones of Western culture.

Each of our concerts features at least one piece of dance music - and some are music of the dance. We look forward to performing folk dances by Bartók, Dvořák and Glière, formal dances by Humperdinck, Meyerbeer, Mozart, Poulenc, Ravel, Johann Strauss and Verdi, and dances from opera, ballet and Broadway by Bernstein, Borodin, Offenbach, Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Wagner…Marches, Waltzes, Renaissance Dances, Boléro and the Rite of Spring.

We have exceptional soloists to join us this season. We welcome the German pianist Benjamin Moser to open our season with Brahms’ Second Piano Concerto. Regina Helcher Yost will dazzle us with a piccolo concerto, Christopher Collins Lee will play Mozart on Leopold Mozart’s own violin, the 2010 HHIPC winner will perform Rachmaninoff’s daunting Third Concerto, young winners of the HHSO Youth Concerto Competition and several of our own musicians will play favorites. And we’ll join forces with the Hilton Head Dance Theatre, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra Chorus, and the Hilton Head Choral Society Children’s Chorus.

As you look through our programs, you’ll find music by the masters – Bach, Brahms, Haydn, Grieg, Holst, Mozart, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Weber…and a few names which may not be as familiar, but whose music will fill your hearts.

We hope you enjoy our season of Music and the Dance. Each concert has its own personality and sense of occasion. See you at the Symphony!

See you at the Symphony!
