2011 Concerto Competition

HHSO Youth Concerto Competition
Since 2000, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra has sponsored a Youth Concerto Competition. Its purpose is to provide talented young musician the opportunity to perform standard orchestral repertoire from memory before an audience. This year's competition will be held on February 5, 2011. HHSO Youth Concerto Competition Guidelines
Eligibility	Musicians who play orchestral instruments (excluding piano), age 18 or younger who have not graduated high school are eligible. Previous prize winners, who have or are scheduled to solo with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, are not eligible.
Audition Piece	The selection must be a recognized solo (single instrument only) with orchestral accompaniment (not an arrangement, transcription or student work), even if not properly titled 'concerto,' and it must be a work for which score and parts are currently available. It must be between 6 and 10 minutes in length and may be edited to meet the time limitation.
Applications	Contestants are required to register on line by November 15, 2010. They will mail a complete application with a postmark no later than November 30, 2010. Details of the application are described in a later section of this website.
Judges	The panel will consist of Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra Music Director, Mary Woodmansee Green, and two professional musicians.
Prizes*	First Prize - $500 and a solo performance with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra Second Prize - $300 – Possible performance opportunities on Hilton Head Third Prize** - $100 – Possible performance opportunities on Hilton Head
Any or all of the prizes will be awarded at the discretion of the Judges. *Repertoire, dates, and times of the solo performances will be at the discretion of the Music Director.
The Application Process Registration Applicants must submit an on-line registration form by November 15, 2010. Receipt of your on-line registration form will be confirmed via email with detailed instructions for preparing your application. No registrations will be accepted after the deadline. Application Contents Your Application Package Must Include A CD of your performance with piano accompaniment A letter signed by your parents / guardians giving you permission to perform in the Concerto Competition and authorizing the HHSO-YCC to use any of your application materials for promoting the competition. A letter signed by your private music teacher giving you permission to perform your selection in the Concerto Competition. Three (3) 8 ½ x 11, full size, photocopies of your music with piano accompaniment. A $30 non-refundable application fee (check is to be made out to HHSO) Additional Items to be Submitted by Email Prior by November 30, 2010 A one or two paragraph resume of your musical and non-musical accomplishments A current photograph (preferably a jpeg file) of the applicant with their instrument for use in press releases.
Finalists Finalists will be selected by a blind screening of the submitted CD. All applicants will be notified of the finalist selection via email by December 22, 2010. Non Finalist will receive written evaluation sheets All finalists will perform with an accompanist, supplied by the Competition, on Hilton Head Island on Saturday, February 5, 2010.
