Days of Celebration: Kwanzaa and Watch Night
Join us at SoundWaves as our Gullah concert event series continues its second year with a timely observation of two seasonal cultural traditions. Enjoy the thoughts of Gullah-Geechee Brenda H. Williams who discusses Kwanzaa, the contemporary Christmastime celebration of black history and culture. Then, help us ring in Watch Night, a New Year’s Eve commemoration of faith and strength marking the awaited midnight eve of 1863 and its promise of liberation delivered by the Emancipation Proclamation. Our reflection on these two moments of celebration and community shines a light on the resolve of our native island Gullah-Geechee community.
Chef Tracey Young has prepared a classic Watch Night’s Feast menu for all to enjoy, including options of Baked ham, hoppin’ john rice with smoked meats, collards with smoked turkey, macaroni & cheese, and cornbread; Baked turkey wings, mashed potatoes, and green beans (GF); Two-piece fried chicken leg and thigh, hoppin’ john rice with smoked meats, collards with smoked turkey, macaroni & cheese, and cornbread; and Vegetable okra gumbo and cornbread (V).
