Why Juneteenth?

Join us at SoundWaves for Why Juneteenth?, the grand season finale of our expanded Gullah Cultural Series second year, a community partnership elevating awareness of Gullah Geechee culture. This edition points forward to the upcoming celebration of Juneteenth, now a federal holiday officially named Juneteenth National Independence Day, commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.

Gullah Cultural Series artistic advisor, Lavon Stevens, has invited Ahmad Ward, Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park executive director and Bridgette Frazier, founder of the Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center, co-founder of BlacQuity, and owner operator of Chef B’s Eatz Food Truck and Catering, to join him in an informative discussion revealing the early church-centered observation and now more broadly culturally recognized celebration of the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Also, Nun Fula Guardians of The Culture father and son Abu Majied and Yusuf Major are West African Gullah Geechee Drummers from Savannah, Ga who pride on keeping the spirit of the drum alive and well. They have been drumming together for over 20 years since Yusuf was the age of 5, Abu Majied has been drumming for over 50 years; performing at a variety of festivals, ceremonies, celebrations. Recognized in 2016 by Secretary of State receiving certificate of appreciation for community leadership and commitment.
