PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Friends of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra,
Here we are at the beginning of a new Symphony year. I am honored to serve as President of this League, and am looking forward to an exciting season, supported by a talented and dedicated executive committee and an excellent board of directors.
We have many wonderful activities planned, including six Musicales scheduled from October through April; our second Swing Fore the Symphony Golf Tournament on October 31st; and our ever-popular Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show on March 21st. In addition there will be several post-concert receptions and a SOVA conference in October.
We help with the youth concerto competition in January and a chamber music program for children at Sound Waves in June. We provide volunteers for The Concours, the International Piano Competition and the Symphony Under the Stars events. The Spring Fling, a party to thank our League members, is scheduled for May 10th. As you see, there are many opportunities to become involved.
In addition to supporting our beloved Symphony, we function as a friendraising organization. Many wonderful relationships have arisen through our volunteer activities. If you are a League member, we give you our heartfelt thanks. If you are not a member, won’t you join us? The application is available on the Symphony website.
See you at The Symphony!
—Carol Gyllenhoff, President, HHSO League

JOIN US AT THE SOVA CONFERENCE
Hosted by the League of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, the Southeastern Orchestra Volunteer Association (SOVA) Roundtable will take place in Hilton Head, SC, on October 13 – 14, 2022. This important conference welcomes volunteers across Southeastern orchestra Leagues and Guilds. Since its inception in 2004 and establishment in 2005 as a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, SOVA’s mission is to provide a learning and networking venue for symphony volunteers to exchange ideas, best practices and model programs.
The theme for this year’s conference is The “New” Roaring Twenties: A Renaissance of Sound and Support. This two-day event is designed to share, advocate and support the work of Southeastern orchestra volunteers offering strategies for success as well as a toolbox of resource, skills and personal connections.
The conference features a keynote address to CEOs and volunteer League and Guild members by the President and CEO of The League of American Orchestras, Simon Woods. President Woods brings more than thirty years of leadership experience with orchestras and is deeply committed to the role of arts organizations in the community.
Of particular interest to volunteer members is the presentation by Michelle Hamilton, CFRE, on the challenges and opportunities for fundraising in the new roaring 20’s. A Managing Director at Carter, Michelle Hamilton brings 30 years of nonprofit leadership experience with expertise in annual giving, major campaigns, and leadership development.

SWING FORE THE SYMPHONY LEAGUE GOLF FUNDRAISER

The League of the HHSO is once again hosting the “Swing Fore the Symphony” golf fund raiser. Last year we were able to donate over $55,000 to the symphony’s many community outreach programs. We hope to do the same this year but we need your help.
The golf event will be held at the prestigious Wexford Golf Club on Monday, October 31st. The format is a step aside scramble starting at 9 a.m. A reception with appetizers and open bar will follow. Over 40 items will be available to bidders at the silent auction. Since the event is being held on Halloween, there will be some Spooktacular surprises in store.
We still have a few openings available for golfers either as a single or your own foursome. If you are interested in participating either as a golfer, being a hole sponsor, or making a monetary donation, please contact Linda Moloney by text or phone at 843-384-4810.
October is a great time to get back in the swing … so please help us make our second golf tournament a success so we can keep the music playing.
Thank you,
The Golf Committee

HHSO President and CEO’s Message

Thank you for renewing your support of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra through your membership with our wonderful League! The HHSO is extremely fortunate—and proud—to have such a strong and dedicated volunteer organization to help us in “inspiring, enriching and uniting the Lowcountry.” The upcoming SOVA Roundtable will re-affirm the HHSO League’s leadership position as one of the most successful associations in the region.
In many places, volunteerism has suffered during the pandemic. While our League’s membership growth has bucked the national trend, the HHSO is still, and always, looking for more volunteers. If you have a few hours to offer, please reach out to our League or contact the HHSO directly at [email protected] or (843) 842-2055.
We look forward to sharing many memorable musical experiences in the coming season.
—Alan Jordan, President and CEO, HHSO
