2023 Young Persons Concert

Young Persons Concert and Carnegie Hall’s Link Up program invite elementary students to become part of the orchestra

Nearly 1,700 Beaufort County elementary school students experienced the excitement of a live professional orchestra through the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra’s 2023 Young Persons Concert, held April 25.

Presented as part of HHSO’s ongoing commitment to music education, the concert brought students together for “The Orchestra Rocks,” an interactive musical experience developed through Carnegie Hall’s Link Up program.

In 2023, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra continued its partnership with Carnegie Hall to bring Link Up to nine Beaufort County elementary schools. The program introduces students in grades three through five to orchestral music through an interactive classroom curriculum that prepares them to become active participants in a live concert.

Throughout the program, students learn to sing, play instruments and explore fundamental musical concepts in their own classrooms. The experience culminates with the Young Persons Concert, where students perform along with professional musicians from their seats in the audience.

This year’s “The Orchestra Rocks” program took students on an imaginative musical journey while giving them the opportunity to experience firsthand how rhythm, melody and orchestral instruments work together.

Connecting Young People With Live Music

Young people have long been an important part of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra’s mission, which includes inspiring young musicians through opportunities to perform and be recognized while enriching the community through youth programs.

The Young Persons Concert is part of Music Bridges, HHSO’s broader educational initiative designed to awaken musical curiosity among the more than 10,000 students within Beaufort County schools.

Through Music Bridges, students have opportunities to meet professional musicians, learn about orchestral instruments and experience live performances that bring music education beyond the classroom.

For many students, the Young Persons Concert provides their first opportunity to hear a professional orchestra perform live. Rather than simply listening, students become part of the performance, transforming the concert hall into an extension of their classroom and making orchestral music an experience they can see, hear and create together.

Community Support Makes the Music Possible

The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra’s 2023 Young Persons Concert and educational programming were made possible through the generous support of First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island, The Bargain Box, the Music Performance Trust Fund and the Mary Briggs Youth Foundation.

Their support helps HHSO continue providing meaningful live musical experiences and educational opportunities for young people throughout Beaufort County.
