Music. Stories. History. Culture.

The Gullah Geechee Cultural Series: Gullah Me, Gullah You celebrates the people, music, traditions and stories of the Gullah Geechee community on Hilton Head Island and throughout the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor.

Presented through a collaboration of local cultural organizations and the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, the series brings audiences together for meaningful conversations, extraordinary music, authentic cuisine and first-person perspectives from the people helping preserve and carry Gullah Geechee culture forward.

More than a performance series, Gullah Me, Gullah You is an invitation to listen, learn, connect and celebrate.

A Living Culture. A Living Story.

Gullah Geechee culture is deeply woven into the history and identity of Hilton Head Island and the Lowcountry.

Descendants of West and Central Africans who were enslaved along the southeastern coast created communities with distinctive traditions, language, music, foodways, spirituality, craftsmanship and storytelling practices. Generations of Gullah Geechee families have preserved those traditions while continuing to shape the culture of the region today.

The Gullah Geechee Cultural Series explores that history while also looking at the people, ideas and issues shaping the community now.

Programs may examine subjects ranging from music and faith to education, economic sustainability, preservation, entrepreneurship, family history and the worldwide influence of Gullah Geechee culture.

Each gathering offers another chapter in a much larger story.

Where Music Meets Conversation

The Gullah Geechee Cultural Series has a format all its own.

Part concert, part conversation and part cultural gathering, each program blends live music, storytelling, interviews and community voices into an experience designed to be both engaging and illuminating.

Local Gullah Geechee citizens, historians, cultural leaders, artists and special guests share their experiences and perspectives, while musicians bring those stories to life through jazz, gospel, spirituals and other musical traditions shaped by the African American experience.

The series has been described as a kind of musical “show-talk” experience, reversing the traditional talk-show format by placing music at the heart of the conversation.

The result is personal, spontaneous and deeply connected to the community.
