President’s Message:
Hitting the Right Notes in 2023 -2024

This year is already off to an exciting start with an equal mix of new and returning Board members who have been hard at work all summer.

Our first and biggest fundraiser of the year, our golf tournament is right around the corner!  On October 16, Swing for the Symphony will take place at Wexford Golf Club.  We still have just a few spots for golfers available.  The format is a scramble with multiple tees, so it should be fun for everyone.  COME AND PLAY WITH US!!  Forms can be found online.  Many thanks to those of you who are volunteering that day!  Without all of you, the tournament would not happen!

The purpose of The League shall be to support and promote the orchestra and its associated programs.  This is accomplished through participation in fundraising, special events, music education, and volunteer services to encourage community awareness and appreciation of the orchestra and its associated programs.  We continue to embrace this purpose and look forward to updating our efforts in many areas.

A goal for this year is to spread the word and refresh ideas about the value of our HHSO to the community at large while maintaining our monetary contribution to symphony operations.  I am a firm believer that the Hilton Head community and the surrounding communities are only robust because of the multiple cultural and educational opportunities here.  For its part, the HHSO has diversified into many musical genres.  If you have not been to Jazz in the Park, a Pops Concert, a Gullah tribute, a symphonic concert, a Musicale, or a Supper Club, please take a look at the website HHSO.org and see all the opportunities there!

You will soon receive your directory.  In that mailing, you will also find an Events Calendar card and a window cling.  You can help in our effort to increase our outreach to the community.  PLEASE do put the League cling in a window in your car.  Hopefully, someone will ask you about the League and you can have the joy of bringing in a new League member or a new audience member for the Symphony!

The League will continue to offer Musicales; the Luncheon, Fashion Show, and Silent Auction; and the end-of-year celebration known as Spring Fling. In addition, we will be calling on members to support the HHSO through volunteerism at events such as the Concert in the Park; Symphony Under the Stars; the Youth Concert; and others.

It is my personal goal to actively engage as many League members as possible in all our endeavors.  This will be a great year!

— Terry Hicks

“Swing Fore the Symphony” Golf Tournament is Looking Great!

Swing FORE the Symphony logo

Preparations for the third annual League’s “Swing Fore the Symphony” Golf Tournament are well underway and we are in a great position to support our Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra.  We have nearly 120 golfers and a tremendous number of sponsors for the event on Monday, October 16.

We’re playing, again, at Wexford’s Arnold Palmer-designed course and, at $300 to play, it is a great value. Golfers will be treated to coffee and pastries to start, golf with cart on a very exclusive course, a wonderful box lunch (the best I’ve ever had!), a roaming beverage cart, and then a fabulous reception with hors d’oeuvres and an open bar in the Wexford Clubhouse. PLUS all players receive a voucher for two tickets to a Symphony concert.

During the reception, we’ll have Live and Silent Auctions with a Pig Pull, beautiful (and expensive) earrings, a “staycation” package, golf-for-4 at every prestigious golf club in the Hilton Head area, and other items too numerous to mention up for bid. Get ready to treat yourself!

The Golf Tournament has been a significant fundraiser for the League and this year will be no exception. IT’S NOT TOO LATE!!! You can still participate by playing, sponsoring a hole, or making a donation. Please just call me 914-489-3713 or email me at [email protected]

and I’ll be happy to give you the proper information and forms.

— Bret Jacobowitz, HHSO League Golf Tournament Chairman

Musicales Are Coming!!

As summer draws to a close we are preparing for another season of Musicales, our intimate concerts in private homes throughout our community.  We are happy to report that the performers and programs for six Musicales have been set.  Mario has outdone himself in presenting an exceptional line-up of great musicians and fabulous music. Thank you so much, Mario.

You have received, or will shortly receive, your invitation to order tickets. We hope to have the invitations in the mail by September 25th.

Our first Musicale will be on October 29th at Port Royal Beach Club, hosted by Stan Cooke.  Sincere thanks to Stan for all he does for our Musicales.  Carol McCarthy will once again be taking the lead in getting food donations for the Musicale receptions.  Please help her by volunteering to bring your favorite savory or sweet to a Musicale (or two!).

Our Musicale program relies heavily upon the generosity of our sponsors.  Please consider being a sponsor. We look forward to seeing you all for another wonderful season of fabulous music.

— Eileen Durkin and Carol McCarthy

Post-Concert Receptions

We have scheduled four post-concert receptions this season, after Monday evening concerts.  These include the Opening concert on October 23rd; the Holiday Pops concert on November 27th, the Bravo concert on March 4th and the Finale on April 29th.

Many generous League members have offered to bring 3-4 dozen goodies to these events.  We thank them most sincerely.  Co-captains are Sarah Meyer, Joann McElravy and Fred Wolf, and Pat Killeen.  If anyone is interested in being a co-captain, please contact me at [email protected]. It involves setting up before the concert, serving during the reception, and clean up once the guests depart.  Captains can still attend the concert.

These events are an opportunity to greet the musicians and each other after a wonderful musical evening.  We thank all who participate.

See you in the Gathering Space!

— Carol Gyllenhoff
