It is my pleasure to welcome you to the second edition of League Notes for the year 2013/2014. The League has had an extraordinary year to date. We are especially proud that the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra has declared us Season Sponsor. That was done in recognition of our increased financial support. Our fund raising activities have been very successful. Our volunteer activities are also at an all-time high. A special “thank you” to all League members and community supporters who have made this possible.
I am sure you will enjoy this newsletter as it encourages you to participate in the events we have planned.
Happy New Year to you all!
Lois Wilson, President
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
The League has grown by 98 new members since the start of the season! We welcome all of you and look forward to getting to know you and to working with you as volunteers for the various events in the coming months. The more the merrier is certainly true in this case! You will find information in this Newsletter about volunteering for future events. As you will see, there are many ways to be active with the League of the HHSO! Questions? Call Margie Kriney at 686-4774, or Sandy Drayer at 363-6796.
CELEBRATE SPRING AT THE FASHION SHOW

The fourth annual League Luncheon and Fashion Show will be held on March 26, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Sea Pines Country Club.
This year’s show will feature fashions and accessories from Doncaster at Pineland Station. Doncaster, a high quality clothing line noted for sophisticated styling and elegant fabrics, offers fashion options for real women. These traditional fashions will be modeled by League members.
As in the past, there will be something for everyone at the silent auction, featuring exciting items such as vacation get-a-ways, a jewelry and handbag boutique, golf rounds, local tours, custom baskets and store and gift certificates. Whether treating yourself, or buying a gift, be sure to bid on something – or several somethings! Opening bid prices are low so you’re sure to get a bargain.
As with all League events, proceeds benefit the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra and its youth programs. This event was a sellout last year, so plan early to invite your friends and neighbors and make up a table. Invitations have been sent. If you have not received your invitation, or wish more information, call Mary Ellen Harkins at 843-681-4643. We’re looking forward to seeing you on March 26.
SPRING FLING

Scheduled for Wednesday, May 7, from 5 to 7 PM, at the Bear Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head Plantation, the Spring Fling is our Annual Meeting and is a time to celebrate the League with camaraderie and friendship. It also marks the “changing of the guard.” Any outgoing members of the Executive Committee, Ex-Officio members and Committee Chairs, are announced and the new leadership is introduced.
It is also when The Volunteer of the Year is announced. Last year, Mary Ellen Harkins was honored with this award for her dedication, perseverance, and plain hard work in spearheading
the Fashion Show’s auction and Chairing and organizing the post-concert receptions. As a result of the most successful auction, the League realized a large financial gain. A belated “Congratulations!” Mary Ellen for a job very well done!
So mark your calendars for a great gathering. All League Members are invited to attend. More information will be forthcoming.
LEAGUE MEMBERSHIP
You will be receiving a letter and Membership renewal form in January 2014. An immediate return of the form will facilitate our record keeping and guarantee correct inclusion in theDirectory of members.
New and renewing members will be invited to attend the Spring Fling and receive our Annual report.
LEAGUE MEMBERSHIP CHALLENGE
The League of the HHSO has over 150 male members. A few years ago their predecessors rose to a challenge and literally began what is now the Concours d’Elegance. We would like toencourage our current dynamic male members to rise to a new challenge. This would possibly entail new ways to volunteer or, better still, a unique fund raising activity. If this sparks interest and a willingness to consider doing something creative for the League and the HHSO in the New Year, please email Lois Wilson at [email protected]. All ideas will be welcome.
MUSICALES
DON’T BE LEFT OUT IN THE COLD!!
Join us at a Sunday “Musicale” and enjoy the warmth of musical talent in 2014. So far the performers of the first three musicales have been HOT! These featured a line-up of talent that included a fantastic Four Hand Piano Duo, a stellar Cellist and the ever popular Velvet Caravan. There are four more Musicales scheduled for 2014, however two are completely sold out at this date. A limited number of reservations remain for the “Southern Soiree” on March 2, which will feature four musicians from Georgia Southern University, and for the “Carnival Jubilee” on April 6, a sneak preview of the “Symphony Under the Stars” program, with Maestro John Morris Russell in attendance.
SO DON’T BE LEFT OUT IN THE COLD!
Come in and allow the camaraderie and talented performers to warm your musical heart and soul!

“KITCHENS OF NOTE” TOUR RETURNS FOR AN ENCORE

The date for next year’s Kitchen Tour event is Sunday, September 28, 2014. The new committee is already at work identifying the homeowners and chefs who will host the fun, and sponsors to help offset our expenses, ensuring a financial success. Look for more information in May’s Newsletter and be thinking about how you can become involved. We’ll need lots of volunteers! If you have questions or suggestions, please contact Julie Williams, Committee Chair, at 342-2199.
Last year on September 29, 2013, the League began what we anticipate will be a fall tradition for many years to come—the Kitchens of Note Tour. The inaugural event was completely sold out. Weather, as planned, was perfect as the attendees were transported between elegant homes in Long Cove and Wexford to savor the latest in kitchen designs, and the culinary skills of several top area chefs. Entertainment provided by the Low Key Piano Group added the perfect musical accompaniment. The Board acknowledges and thanks the Committee headed by Barbara Wolf and Bob Koenig, Gloria Daly and Sarah Bergin for staff support, and the more than 60 volunteers whose planning and work made the event such a success.
POST CONCERT RECEPTIONS
The Post-Concert Receptions continue to grow in popularity with the audience as well as musicians. The large crowds seen mingling with our Maestro, guest artists and wonderful musicians also enjoy punch and a wide variety of foods donated by League volunteers. Thank you to all who have helped to make these events so successful. We could not do it without you!
There are six more concerts and the IPC Finals still to come. Our need for volunteers continues to grow as do the number of guests attending the Post-Concert receptions. We would appreciate your emailing us if you are interested in providing homemade cookies (regular or gluten-free), a cheese tray, assorted finger foods or tea sandwiches. Volunteers are also needed to arrange food prior to each concert and to pour punch at the reception. Please let us know if you would like to be part of the excitement by volunteering. It really is fun!
We look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your continuing support of League activities!

“Carnival!” April 8 and 9.
This year’s theme is “Carnival!” conducted by John Morris Russell, who will be joined by the Velvet Caravan Band. The Velvet Caravan is one of the most unusual ensembles in the music business. Combining Gypsy, Honky-Tonk, Swing and Latin, this band plays upbeat tunes from all over the world with thunderous virtuosity and relentless sense of humor. We have it on good authority (anonymous) that THE COLORS for the evenings are GREEN, PURPLE and GOLD. So mark your calendars, bring a picnic dinner, or put together your table plans. You won’t want to miss this one! More details will be coming later.
